Watercolour Rose Macro

Watercolour Macro Rose - NB
Watercolour Rose Macro

A rose macro painted loosely in watercolour. It was painted on Arches paper. The colours I chose to use were Naples Yellow, Quinacridone Rose and Rhodonite Genuine ~ all by Daniel Smith. This painting is my interpretation of one of my own photos shown below…

Macro Rose

Painting an exact copy of the photo is not what I wanted to do – Hazel Soan’s words ring in my ears “you are using the subject matter to create a watercolour, not using watercolour to recreate the subject”. Just capturing the essence of what’s in the photo or my own interpretation is enough. At the end of the day, for me it’s all about getting lots of practice at painting with watercolours and this was very good practice for me…

  1. wow, this is so beautiful! I adore your process of learning more and more about watercolour. I am just at the beginning – but you encourage me to go also in the loosely style of Jean Haines.

    1. Thank you Ina – I can see that I’m making progress with watercolour and I love the learning process. It’s such a beautiful medium to work with but also challenging. I love painting loosely (Jean Haines/Hazel Soan style) – it’s right for me and hopefully will be for you too…

  2. It’s fantastic witnessing your progress with watercolour, Evelyn – this particular picture shows you’ve got real mastery of the medium! It is absolutely stunning and I can almost smell the sweet scent of the rose and feel its cool soft silky texture. Just beautiful.

Thank you for your visit – yes, I did put a lot of work into the Floral Mini-Album but it was worth it! It was amazing fun to do. As soon as I have time and energy to get back in my studio, I have to make a box for it.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. Good Morning Evelyn, I love your watercolor layers, the color is superb. I like a quote by Chuck Close..”Draw/paint what you see, not what you think you see.”

  4. Nicely done, Evelyn! Colours are great!

  5. The photo is beautiful, Evelyn, but the painting?
Oh my goodness, it is absolutely gorgeous!!!
You truly are so very talented, and I so enjoy seeing your work here.

    1. Thank you so much Lisa – I always appreciate your lovely comments. By blogging about my watercolour journey I can more readily see my progress. And if I can inspire others to want to learn too then I will be very happy…

  6. Super inspiration – I’m not sure which one I like more: the photo or your painting! Both are equally wonderful in their own right! It’s also nice to put a face to your name with your new profile photo, Evelyn! xx

    1. Thank you Zsuzsa – I need to keep practicing lots, but I am improving. Generally I don’t photograph well but I quite liked this one so it’s my new profile photo… !

I'd love to hear your observations and musings...
