A 9 cm x 10 cm abstract mixed media sample for my collaged sketchbook, inspired by the Aurora Borealis. The colours at the base are Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue) and Lemon Yellow watercolours. The blue bled into the yellow to create a gorgeous shade of turquoise and to that I added a touch of Emerald and the tiniest bit of Yellow Ochre. When dry I added complimentary shades of Pearl Mica to add a starry sparkle to my Aurora
This is a mixed media collage for my collaged sketchbook. It measures 10 cm x 12 cm including the white border and I used paper, acrylic paint and fabric.
I created my collaged sketchbook using a vintage 1970’s recipe book that I bought from a charity shop for 50p ! I simply tore out the pages I didn’t want (the resulting sketchbook would be too bulky otherwise) and collaged the rest using pages from vintage/antique books. You can see a couple of photos of my empty sketchbook here on Flickr and here.
It has taken me ages to decide what to do with my collaged sketchbook and it’s been sitting on a shelf in my studio for a couple of years! It’s only recently that I’ve decided to fill it with small samples of my own artwork. Hopefully these small samples of art will inspire me to create other works…
I’ve started to create a series of colour charts in a sketch book I’ve set aside especially for the purpose. I’ve done this purely for my own personal benefit so that I have a reference guide I can refer to when creating art. They help me decide what colours and shades I want to use when planning my work and they give me an idea of which colours I need to mix get get the desired results.
I’ve done about 12 of these charts so far and I have made myself use colours that I don’t generally tend to go for as well as my favourites – so I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little. I’ve found it a really interesting exercise – some colours have reacted quite differently to how I expected. I’ve used just watercolours so far but in time I will move on to some acrylics as well.
I find it inspiring to see the variety of colours all on one page – it makes it easy to see what colours work well together. It’s inspired me to use different colours, tints and shades I might not otherwise have considered.
Most of all though, creating these colour charts has been GREAT FUN!! I find it enormously relaxing and therapeutic!
Here are some of my favourite oil pastel colours in front of an abstract mixed media collage in one of my sketchbooks. The abstract collage consists of collage from my own rejected art experiments, acrylic paint and oil pastels.
A 10 x 10 cm framed abstract mixed media sample for my collaged sketchbook. Acrylic paint used ~ Prussian Blue, a touch of Paynes Grey and white.
A 9 x 9 cm abstract watercolour for my collaged sketchbook – I am just starting to fill it’s empty pages.
I used just three colours – Yellow Ochre, Indigo and Prussian Blue and gently let the colours bleed into each other.
These are mixed media samples for my 6″ x 6″ sketchbook. PVA glue mixed with pearl mica and then heated with a heat gun till it bubbles! I love the shiny, earthy, metallic colours…
Macro views of some fabric based collages. These are mixed media samples for a 14.5 x 14.5 cm sketchbook
The next few images are as they appear in my 14.5 x 14.5 cm sketchbook:
I really like how my fabric collages turned out, although they did end up quite different to how I originally imagined they would. They just kind of evolved as I added more and more acrylic paint. I especially like the macro photos of my collages as they really show off the colours, textures and details better.
I treated myself to a new watercolour last week – indigo. Of course I had to try it out, so I did a series of small samples to go in my 14.5 x 14.5 cm sketchbook. Above is Indigo combined with Cobalt Turquoise.
This sample is Prussian Blue combined with Indigo
This sample is Pthalo Turquoise mixed with Burnt Sienna.
These shades of blue and turquoise are some of my most favourite watercolour shades. These watercolour samples inspired me to do a whole series of denim photos:
Usually it’s photography that inspires me to create some art but this time it was a little artwork that inspired me to take a series of photos. You can view more of these denim images in my Photostream on Flickr.
Abstract mixed media collages
Monday morning I set to work on some abstract collages for my 14.5 x 14.5 cm sketchbook. They are mixed media – mostly acrylic paint with some oil pastels and a little bit of fabric too…
I also did some watercolour samples for my sketchbook too. I love my watercolour paints and plan to do a lot of experimenting with them …
