Misty Blue Mountains

Misty Blue Mountains - NB
Misty Blue Mountains

Monochrome landscapes in indigo watercolour. Mountains interest me at the moment. Maybe it’s because I’m off to Scotland in a few weeks and we’re going to be surrounded by lovely hills, mountains and lochs…

I decided to keep my mountain watercolour landscapes very simple – simple shapes, shadows and colour. My blue mountains have been glued into my watercolour sketchbook. The smaller landscapes above are a mixture of Prussian Blue and Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue).

I first started to experiment with mixed media art in the spring of 2014. I bought a few books and started to try out some of the techniques. It was during this process that I very quickly discovered I love watercolour paint. However, I carried on with my mixed media experiments and it’s only now (3 years later) that I’ve made a conscious decision to develop my love of watercolour paint.

As far as art goes, watercolour painting is my first love. Whether I ever become any good at it is another matter entirely… but perhaps that’s not really what’s important. What’s important is that painting with watercolours is something I love doing and find enormously relaxing and therapeutic…

What Colours?

Subtle Red & Yellow - NB
Indian Red & Yellow Ochre

This blog post is directly related to my previous post. I need to give some thought as to what colours I’m going to paint my Crackle Paste samples with. I only get one shot at painting these samples – I don’t have time to redo them. They are getting posted this week regardless… ! So the big question is what colours? Yesterday evening, while spending time round at my mum’s, I spent an hour or so doing some watercolour samples to help me make a decision. One possibility is the sample above – some subtle reds and yellows…

Paint The Rainbow - NB

or I could paint the rainbow…

Blues and Greens - NB
Intense Blue, Sap Green & Dioxazine Violet

maybe some blues and greens with a hint of mauve

Blue & Yellow - NB
Intense Blue, Lemon Yellow & Sap Green

or just blue, green and yellow.

Blues and Brown 1 - NB
Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue) & Burnt Umber

I love the blue and brown combinations above and below… !

Blues and Brown 4 - NB
Intense Blue, Prussian Blue, Indigo & Vandyke Brown
Blues and Brown 3 - NB
Intense Blue & Vandyke Brown
Blues and Brown 5 - NB
Phthalo Turquoise & Burnt Sienna
Blues and Brown 2 - NB
Intense Blue & Burnt Sienna

The colour sample above is my favourite – a vintage pale blue on the outside gently tinted with the rusty orange Burnt Sienna and intense blue in the centre for a little extra impact.

Blues & Grey - NB
Intense Blue & Paynes Grey

The blues and greys are looking lovely too….

Indigo & Grey - NB
Indigo & Paynes Grey

Above we have Indigo on the left and Paynes Grey on the right. The difference between them is very subtle. I love Indigo….

Just Blue - NB
Intense Blue & Chinese White

Or maybe just shades of blue…

These watercolour samples have given me some great ideas to help me decide what colours to paint my Crackle Paste samples. They’ve helped me narrow down what I really love and what I’m not so keen on…

Aurora

aurora-rn

A 9 cm x 10 cm abstract mixed media sample for my collaged sketchbook, inspired by the Aurora Borealis. The colours at the base are Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue) and Lemon Yellow watercolours. The blue bled into the yellow to create a gorgeous shade of turquoise and to that I added a touch of Emerald and the tiniest bit of Yellow Ochre. When dry I added complimentary shades of Pearl Mica to add a starry sparkle to my Aurora
