This is my very first attempt at painting a winter landscape. I kept the composition very simple; it was based loosely upon the fields near my home and a photo I took some years ago…
It was painted on Arches Aquarelle Rough paper, 140 lb. I used a fairly simple palette of watercolours: Flint Grey (my own grey mix), DS Verditer Blue, DS Sepia, DS Burnt Sienna, W & N Permanent Rose, W & N Indigo and W & N Prussian Blue. The photo doesn’t really do the painting justice. Also this was my first attempt at putting a person into a painting. More landscapes and seascapes are on my watercolour “to do” list for 2021 and painting more people….
Next, also on my 2021 watercolour “to do” list, more roses:
I’ve used a little creative license with the colours for these roses; each one is a different shade of blue – from left to right, Verditer Blue, Prussian Blue and Manganese Blue Hue all by Daniel Smith. I’ve deliberately kept the colours of the roses simple, monochromatic, and just tried to paint petal shapes; I’m slowly improving. I’m going to be on a bit of a watercolour mission with roses in 2021.

This is today’s watercolour offering – The Lady In Grey. This is probably the closest I will ever get to life drawing! It measures 19 cm x 28 cm and was painted on Saunders Waterford high white paper, 140 lb NOT. It was painted loosely without a preliminary sketch. But I did do a pencil sketch on a separate sheet of paper first just to get a feel for the shapes and lines. Here’s my pencil sketch:
I’m hoping that practicing my drawing with a pencil in a separate sketchbook will help me to draw better with my paintbrush. The colours for the skin tones were: Buff Titanium, Naples Yellow, Quinacridone Coral and Burnt Sienna. The grey shawl was painted with a mix of Cobalt Blue and Buff Titanium to make a lovely soft blue/grey.
I like sketching with pencil in a sketchbook but when it comes to watercolour painting I much prefer to paint without a pencil sketch ~ something I’ve learnt from Jean Haines and it has well and truly stuck! However it is a challenge and I need lots of practice.

I don’t seem to have had much time for my art work lately so this week I made time for it. For just an hour or so I decided that everything else can wait….
I started with a fairly simple watercolour sketch of an apple:
I used Prussian Blue and Lemon Yellow plus a tiny bit of Burnt Umber for the stalk The paper is Saunders Waterford and this sketch measures approximately 8″ x 7″.
Next is my first ever attempt at painting a person, albeit a fairly abstract one….
I like my abstract lady in the rain. I have never been very keen to include people in my photography work, although there are a very few exceptions. However, I am very keen to have a go at painting people with watercolour. The colours used here were Paynes Grey, Yellow Ochre, Rose Madder and Burnt Umber. The paper was a left over scrap of Khadi paper and measures approximately 6″ x 6″.
Inspiration for these sketches came from a mixture of Hazel Soan and Jean Haines, both brilliant inspirational watercolour painters. I painted straight onto the paper, no pencil sketches or lines – more drawing with a paint brush.
I enjoyed painting these watercolour sketches. They’re fairly simple and didn’t take long. So it just goes to show even with a busy schedule I can find time to paint if I really want to – even if it’s just 20 minutes or half an hour. Plus watercolour painting is so relaxing, de-stressing and therapeutic….
